Building Infrastructure, Building Communities in Victoria’s Goulburn Valley

In the Goulburn Valley of Victoria, family-owned NL Drainage has been delivering vital civil construction projects for more than 30 years. With expertise spanning sewerage, water mains, pump stations and deep trenching, the business has built a strong reputation for reliability, safety, and community focus.

Most recently, the company expanded its fleet with two new Kobelco excavators — the SK135SR-7 and the SK85SR-7 — purchased through long-term partner Melbourne Tractors. The new machines reinforce NL Drainage’s commitment to efficiency, fuel savings, and operator comfort as it continues to deliver essential infrastructure across the region.

A Strong Family Legacy

Founded over three decades ago by Norm Wereszczuk, the business is now led by Managing Director Brad Wereszczuk and his wife Louise. With a team of 12–15 skilled local operators — many of whom have been with the company for up to a decade — NL Drainage continues to demonstrate its commitment to community employment and quality outcomes.

“Our forte is sewer and water,” Brad said. “We’ve been fortunate to work on projects that keep our team busy year-round, and we take pride in supporting the local community by employing local talent.”

Operating across the Goulburn Valley and into New South Wales, NL Drainage is a trusted contractor for councils, developers, and water authorities.

Two Decades of Partnership with Melbourne Tractors

The relationship between NL Drainage and Melbourne Tractors stretches back more than 20 years.

“I remember the first five-tonne digger we ever bought. Ken himself delivered it on a Saturday morning on a tilt tray truck. That level of service has never changed,” Brad recalled.

Since that first machine, Melbourne Tractors has continued to supply and support NL Drainage’s growing fleet, ensuring the business remains equipped for the demands of modern civil projects.

The New Machines: Kobelco SK135SR-7 and SK85SR-7

Kobelco SK135SR-7: Power Meets Precision

  • Operating Weight: ~15,100 kg
  • Engine: 73 kW Isuzu engine (Tier 3, no AdBlue required)
  • Max Digging Depth: 5.52 m
  • Max Reach: 8.37 m
  • Bucket Digging Force: 105.4 kN

With its short-radius design, the SK135SR-7 is ideal for working in restricted spaces while maintaining stability. Advanced hydraulics provide smooth, precise control, and its fuel-efficient engine consumes just 7.4 litres per hour. The operator’s cab is ROPS-compliant, featuring a 10-inch colour display, jog-dial controls, and 270-degree camera coverage for enhanced safety.

Kobelco SK85SR-7: Compact Yet Capable

  • Operating Weight: 8,400–9,600 kg
  • Engine: 53.7 kW Yanmar engine
  • Max Digging Depth: ~4.6 m
  • Bucket Capacity: 0.28 m³
  • Bucket Digging Force: 60.3 kN

Compact but powerful, the SK85SR-7 is perfect for urban worksites and subdivision projects. It is equipped with Kobelco’s iNDr cooling system, reducing dust and noise while improving engine efficiency. Inside, operators benefit from modern cab design, intuitive controls, and superior visibility.

Comfort and Efficiency in Action

“The operators are more than impressed with the comfort,” Brad said. “And I’m more than impressed with the fuel economy. We can’t fault them at the moment.”

These advantages translate into reduced running costs and improved productivity — key for an industry that demands reliability and efficiency.

Working on the Ground in Kyabram

The new excavators are already deployed on stages six and seven of a residential subdivision in Kyabram, where NL Drainage is responsible for sewerage, water mains, and raw water infrastructure.

“Being involved from the start has been great,” Brad added. “It’s projects like these that keep our team engaged and our business moving forward.”

Looking to the Future

Brad remains confident in the ongoing partnership with Melbourne Tractors and Kobelco.

“As long as the sun’s shining and the work’s there, I’m sure we’ll be purchasing plenty more Kobelco excavators in the time to come,” he said with a smile.

For Melbourne Tractors, supporting operators like NL Drainage is equally rewarding.

“It’s great to see our machines making a real difference on the ground,” said Simon Gillespie, Sales Representative at Melbourne Tractors. “We look forward to many more years of working together.”
